212 Drum Recording Space
Year: 2022 (Ongoing)

Design Process

The room was cleaned and tested with a sine sweep in FuzzMeasure, and finally drafted in Autocad. From there, we designed acoustic treatment solutions to fit our needs, as well as shelving for equipment storage.  We also built an audio rack, deciding to use a Yamaha TIO-01608-D as our main I/O.  We added a patch panel for routing other rack modules and sending to both monitor speakers and a headphone amp.  Auralex T-Fusers were to be mounted into the ceiling in a non-symmetrical pattern wherever possible. Rockwool was also to be placed in the ceiling. Finally, a sound absorbing blanket would be mounted over the window to block street noise.

Installation

Prior to installation, the room was painted. Each acoustic panel was constructed and filled with two different layers of acoustic dampening material; Rockwool Comfortboard 90, FRK703, and a slight air gap close to the wall. The frames were drilled into the wall. An acoustic blanket was hung over the window. The shelf was assembled and placed in the corner of the room.  The T-fusers were placed throughout the room, each filled with rockwool. An isolating riser was cut using wood, green glue, mass-loaded vinyl, and carpet. Small shelves for our talkback/monitor speakers were built from scrap plywood and L brackets and wired to an amp.

Technical Work

212 Shelving
Year: 2022

These shelves, part of 212 proper rather than the drum recording space, were designed to hold additional vinyl records, reel-to-reel master tapes, and various paperwork and books while providing acoustic dampening for the room.  The larger also features a record player, two bookshelf speakers and a vinyl record cleaner.

The Arsonists
Role: Speaker System Designer

Year: 2022

Assisted in designing the speaker system for The Arsonist production. The speaker functions can be read below:

  • Utilized the permanent surround system; great for ambiences and some sound localization.

  • JF60z's and Meyer UPJ-1's flown above the audience for vocal reinforcement and localization (actors go into the audience throughout the show).

  • Nexo monitors, Meyer UPM-1, JBL Control 28 for vocal/sound effect localization.

  • Subwoofers placed underneath the stands and upper cats. Subs under the stands were there to shake the stands and provide a full-body bass feel.

  • JBL CBT50LA-1 inside seat on the stage to provide sound effect localization

  • MK6124's placed under the attic setpiece for sound effect localization
